No TransLink Tax Campaign Takes To The Air Sunday

Author: Jordan Bateman 2015/05/01

VANCOUVER, B.C.: The No TransLink Tax campaign will hit the skies of the Lower Mainland this Sunday, May 3, when a crowd-funded ‘Vote No To TransLink Tax’ sign is towed by an airplane around the region.

“We are literally going over the TransLink Mayors’ heads this Sunday,” said Jordan Bateman, No TransLink Taxspokesperson. “Unlike the TransLink Mayors, we don’t have $7 million in taxpayer money to try and overwhelm people with ads, robocalls, flyers, telephone town halls and direct mail. We have to be creative in getting our NO message out, and this flight is another way of doing that.”

Sunday’s three-hour flight will take off from the Pitt Meadows Regional Airport at 10:30 a.m., and continue around the Lower Mainland (including over the Vancouver Marathon) until 1:30 p.m. The plane will fly near TransLink’s headquarters in New Westminster for a few minutes at about noon Sunday.

A crowd-funding campaign last week raised $1,890 to fund the flight. A private donor went directly to the airplane owner and generously added two more hours of flight time, meaning the No TransLink Tax banner will return for another three-hour flight on Saturday, May 9.

“The TransLink Mayors have done everything they can to try and shut down our campaign – even using bylaw officers to tear down lawn signs and refusing to allow NO ads on public property,” said Bateman. “But they don’t have any authority over the sky. The message that’s on so many Lower Mainlanders’ minds – ‘Vote No to TransLink Tax’ will be seen.”
